RECOGNITION

In 2018, Santa Clara Law School named Phil its Lawyer of the Year as the Owens Award winner. Since 2007, Phil has been a Super Lawyer. For years, Phil has received the “AV Preeminent Rating” from Martindale-Hubbell. He is a Fellow with the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, limited to 500 active trial lawyers in the United States under the age of 70, where he serves on its Long-Range Planning Committee. Phil also is a member with the American Board of Trial Advocates. Phil is a Bencher and former past President with the Honorable William A. Ingram American Inn of Court in San Jose.

After passing the bar in 1980, Phil later served as the first chair of the State Bar’s Trade Secrets Subcommittee and on the State Bar’s Federal Courts Committee. Phil also chaired the Federal Courts Committee for the Santa Clara Bar Association. Phil continues to serve as a Judge Pro Tem for the Santa Clara County Superior Court. He also serves as a certified mediator for the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.

Phil has written and lectured before bar associations, industry trade groups, law schools, and universities, among others, on such topics as financial fraud, antitrust, expert witnesses, corporate compliance, ethics, and mediation. Phil is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court; the Supreme Court of California; Courts of Appeal of the State of California; United States Courts of Appeal: Fifth Circuit, Ninth Circuit, District of Columbia; and Federal District Courts: Central District of California, Eastern District of California, and Northern District of California. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of California, and the Santa Clara and San Mateo County Bar Associations.

Phil serves on the Board of Directors of Samaritan House in San Mateo. He has served on the Board of Directors and Chair of the Board of HomeFirst, formerly EHC LifeBuilders, where he continues to serve on the Board of Advisors. He also served on the Board of Directors of Villa Siena and the Villa Siena Foundation (former Chairman). Phil co-founded and served as President of the Catholic Professionals Club of the Diocese of San Jose. Phil served as Scoutmaster of Troop 222 and coached numerous athletic teams for his sons John, Matthew, and Mark.
